PAWING THE PREMISE:
This exciting musical-comedy-adventure movie sits at the tonal and style crossroads of Home Alone 2, Annie, 101 Dalmatians and High School Musical.
Rising from the theme of thinking with your heart to do the right thing, this family film is set in and around New York City where a precocious, spunky, and irresistible band of sixth-grade girlfriends must find their dogs, which have mysteriously disappeared from Central Park and fallen into the hands of the dreaded “Puppy Shelter Lady” and her hapless henchmen. (Song Sample: “New York Rhapsody.”)
SNIFFING OUT THE STORY:
Lily Rose’s dog, Chip, falls ill and is taken to the vet who is Lily Rose’s friend Taylor Angelique’s Aunt. When Lily Rose is told that Chip must be put to sleep and is taken into the “back room,” Chip looks back at Lily and Lily sadly sings the song: “Never Say Goodbye.”
This is why Taylor Angelique decides to find Lily another dog and this simple act launches the adventure when Taylor falls in love with the “new” dog herself and can’t bring herself to give it to Lily.
Taylor Angelique, Hannah Faith, Olivia Hope, Anna Sophie, Karina Grace, Brianna Joy, Kayla Rae and Lily Rose are all best buds – and so are their dogs – Patches (Beagle), Duchess (King Charles Spaniel), Sniff (Yellow Lab), Bubulina (Brittany Spaniel), Dotcom (Dalmatian), Longfellow (Dachshund), and Cookie (Australian Terrier).
The girls have their own “girl-speak” shorthand in communicating – and so do the dogs – but the dogs “bark” because they are after all…dogs. However, when they bark, it’s translated on the screen in English subtitles for those humans who can’t tell a woof from a yip or yap. (Songs throughout like: “Doggie Talk,” “Dogs Have Feelings Too,” “Why Can’t a Person Be Like a Dog,” “Too Doggone Good”)
The trouble all starts when Taylor tries to hide Cookie, a little Australian Terrier she got for Lily as a replacement for Lily’s own dog who had died. Taken by Cookie’s unabashed cuteness, Taylor selfishly decides to keep the dog for herself. This leads to one bigger lie after another which starts the avalanche of adventure for Taylor and the girls when they meet in the park.
Their playtime gathering in the park is being watched through binoculars by some unsavory characters – three rotten stinkers. They are plotting to get the dogs for their “boss.” (Song sample: “Shameless and Obnoxious”)
The girls and dogs decide to have a “sleep-over” at Taylor’s house, but they are followed home by the suspicious men. The girls climb into jammies and ignite the “girl-fun” with a song: “Celebrate Your Childhood.”
Taylor, however, attempts to hide Cookie so that Lily Rose does not see her. This upsets all the dogs for they know this behavior should not be allowed. (A song entitled: “I Don’t Like The Way People Think” is “barked” from the dogs perspective and translated on the screen.)
The dogs decide they will teach Taylor and the girls what loss feels like so that the need for real compassion is truly understood.
And so, the dogs all leave the girls and run away which turns into an unexpected dangerous adventure through thunder and lightning – all the while being stalked by the three rotten stinkers. (Song sample: “Dog Ballet”)
The girls awaken, panicked to see that their dogs have all gone.
Taylor Angelique, feeling guilty, suspects what might have happened, but despite her name, angelic behavior doesn’t come easily to her, and the harder she tries to find answers, the more she has to hide her own mistakes. This leads her fearless friends across town, into the park, and into three kinds of trouble—hilarious, dangerous, and hilariously dangerous. (Song: “How Bad Can It Get?”)
The three rotten stinkers lure the dogs into an outfitted dognapping van in a shabby part of the city and haul them off to their “boss,” the infamous “Puppy Shelter Lady,” Fawn Funkhauser! Two of the three rotten stinkers are ridiculously irredeemable, but one is a good guy waiting to find the courage to break free.
And so, the girls create a Scotland-Yard-Like Sleuth-Puppy-Patrol . And, through their terrorifying, mystifying, petrofying, electrifying and non-denying, sleuth-methods of sneaking, peeking and wreaking havoc on those smug thugs, who stole their dogs, the girls’ search leads them to the shabby part of the city, where the dogs last were. The girls are now exhausted, scared and lost.
Then, suddenly, they are confronted by King, a huge German Shepherd. The dog will not let them leave. He is holding them captive for a reason – he’s waiting for his pack leader to catch up – and she is Romee, an old friend of the girls who moved away to this distant part of the city. Their reunion is a relief for all and Romee immediately joins their rescue mission. (Song: “Together Again”)
It turns out that King had peed on the tires of the dognapping van when the three rotten stinkers were cruising this area of the city looking for victims and his keen nose can still track the scent. He gets the girls to follow him…all over…here and there…up and over…hither and yon…until an ominous warehouse rises into the night sky before them – Funkhauser’s Factory of Infamy.
Really ugly Fawn Funkhauser has a nifty, nasty little business of capturing other people’s dogs, creating fake pedigree papers for them and selling them at a profit to unsuspecting pet seekers. Dogs and people all tuck their tails between their legs when encountering her preposterously punishing personality – including her hapless henchmen. (Song: “I’m Not As Good As I Look”)
Working together, the girls plan how to take on Fawn Funkhauser and the three rotten stinkers even though they must conquer their own considerable fear of her frightful reputation.
The dogs, led by Taylor’s spunky Beagle, Patches, are every bit as resourceful as their mistresses and are plotting their own escape.
King, Romee’s German Shepherd, runs between the girls and the dogs carrying messages to his canine companions about what’s being planned by the pack leaders.
With this “inside” information of what the girls are planning, the captive dogs instinctively know how to help the girls totally discombobulate Fawn Funkhauser and her plans.
What ensues is a wonderfully choreographed musical action set piece of how the entire warehouse operation is turned into a mouse trap/falling domino effect of gadgets, conveyor belts, boxes, and moving parts all orchestrated by the clever and cunning coordination of dogs and girls that completely flusters, foils, and flattens Funkhauser & crew to their wits end until they are fit to be tied and brought to their knees in a crescendo of comedy that will set tails a waggin’ while watchin’.
The dogs are finally reunited with their girls and the good dog thief has learned his lesson and actually helped in the rescue. (Song sample: “Trust your Goosebumps.”)
Taylor Angelique, having learned about loss and the importance of “giving,” which brings us closer; and, “taking,” which separates us; makes the tough choice – but the right choice – and gives little Cookie, the Australian Terrier, to Lily Rose. (Song: “Think With Your Heart.”)
The girls take a friendship pledge forever and form the Only Hearts Club to teach others to think with their hearts and do the right thing. (Song: “Feeling Good”)
As we see the beautiful and magical skyline of New York City, we reprise “New York Rhapsody.”
There are 20 completed songs in this refreshing and fun-filled Musical-Adventure-Comedy. A Broadway Musical, already written, should follow the movie along with a CD and Book to precede the movie.
Now that’s all the Poop that’s fit to Scoop…for now.
